How to Find Part-Time Jobs as a Student: A beginner’s guide to job searching

Posted on: Thursday, February 20th, 2025

Finding a part-time job as a student can feel overwhelming, but with the right mindset, you can land a flexible role that fits around your studies. Whether you need extra cash, work experience, or both, here’s a quick guide to help you get started.

1. Use Your University’s Job Shop

Yep, that’s us! The SU has a JobShop where local employers post student-friendly roles. These jobs often come with flexible hours and fair wages. You can also check UoM’s Careers portal or visit the SU to explore available opportunities. We also post available part time positions on our Instagram account @jobshopsu.

2. Explore Online Job Boards

Websites like Indeed, totaljobs, and LinkedIn regularly post part-time jobs suited for students. Use filters like “part-time,” “remote,” or “evening shifts” to find positions that fit your schedule. Once you find jobs that match your preferences, we recommend applying directly through the employers’ websites and not through the job boards. This shows your commitment to the employer and your willingness to put in extra work when needed!

3. Look for On-Campus Jobs

Universities offer a variety of part-time jobs, which are different from SU jobs, including:
Student Ambassadors – Represent your university at events.
Library Assistants – Ideal for quiet, flexible work.
Catering & Hospitality Roles – Work in campus cafés or bars.

University jobs offer different skills and benefits from UMSU jobs, but they are great because they’re close to lectures and often offer student-friendly contracts. Keep an eye on openings at the end of the academic year or during summer for openings that start in the next academic year. Remember to plan ahead and look in advance for your next part-time role!

4. Tap into Local Businesses

Manchester has plenty of independent cafes, shops, and restaurants that hire students. Visit local and independent businesses with a printed CV and ask if they’re hiring. Many managers appreciate proactive applicants, and this can be a faster way to get hired. Make sure to be well presented, have a cheerful, friendly attitude, and don’t be afraid to strike a conversation with the staff, a hiring manager could be assessing your skills without your knowledge!

5. Network & Ask Around

Many student jobs aren’t advertised because word of mouth is key! Ask teaching assistants, friends, or even your student societies if they know of any openings. University Facebook groups and WhatsApp chats often have job listings too. Afraid to ask? Just remember that the worst can happen is a simple ‘no’!

Final Tip: Be Quick & Be Prepared!

Student jobs get snapped up fast, so apply early and keep your CV updated. If you don’t hear back, don’t be discouraged—keep applying and following up with potential employers.
