If you are an international student at the University of Manchester studying on a student visa, there are restrictions on the type and amount of work you can do in the UK. It’s important that you understand and follow these rules when applying for part-time jobs.
Working During Term Time
Most students on a student visa are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week during term time.
This is a strict limit set by UK immigration rules. You must not work more than 20 hours in any given week, even if you work fewer hours in another week.
“Term time” refers to your official teaching and study periods. These dates can vary depending on your course, so you should check your specific term dates with your school or programme.
Working Outside Term Time
During official University vacation periods, most students can work full-time hours. This usually includes winter, spring, and summer breaks.
However, if you are a postgraduate student (particularly on a master’s course), you may not have formal vacation periods. In many cases, you will be considered in term time for the full duration of your course, including during your dissertation period.
If you are unsure, you should check with your academic school or the University’s student support services before increasing your working hours.
What Counts Towards the 20-Hour Limit?
The 20-hour weekly limit includes all types of work, such as:
- Paid employment
- Unpaid work or volunteering
- Work placements (unless they are a formal and assessed part of your course)
If you have more than one job, your total combined hours must not exceed 20 hours per week during term time.
Types of Work You Cannot Do
Under a student visa, you must not:
- Be self-employed or freelance
- Set up or run a business
- Take a permanent full-time job
- Work as a professional sportsperson or coach
Right to Work Checks
Before starting a job, employers are required to check your right to work in the UK. You may be asked to provide:
- A share code to confirm your immigration status
- Your passport and visa documentation
